PLANET PUGILISM is proud to present downconverted HIGH DEFINTION telecasts. To downconvert is to convert a high resolution input signal to lower resolution signal that any television can display. True high definition telecasts will be available here in the near future. For the uninitiated, let's take a look at the fundamental difference between standard television and high definition television.

This is how a high definition telecast would appear. The aspect ratio of the video 16:9, meaning that it's 16 units of measurement in width and 9 units of measurement in height. On a standard (or 4:3 aspect ratio) defintion television set, black bars would appear above and below the video, making it appear "letterboxed". As stated before, this is a downconverted signal, meaning that it's not true high definition, but superior to a standard definition telecast.

This is the standard version that most of us are familiar with. The video encompasses the entire screen. Some networks offer a downconverted HD signal with video information on the left and right sides cropped (or cut off) instead of the wider picture offered with an unaffected HD signal.
In the browse by year section of this site, our downconverted HD DVDs bear the following logo:
In the future, our true high defintion DVDs (whether it's Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, the two main high definition disc formats), will bear this logo:
